Why Did Chen Lifu Lived a Hundred Years?
Chen Lifu (1900–2001) was a Chinese bureaucrat, politician, and anti-communist in the Republic of China,
a member of the Kuomintang; the Confidential Secretary of Chiang Kai-shek; eventually became the
Minister of Education. Chen believed in: (1) Regular activity: walking everyday for 28 years; had never
stopped throughout (2) Peace of mind: he was not only contented but also never lost his temper nor got
into a fuzz unnecessarily; when Chiang gave him a task, he tried his very best but, when unsuccessful,
his rationale was he had never been educated as a politician (3) His marriage boasts 63 years; his motto,
“love the similarities; respect the differences”: no 2 persons have identical characters; as long as the basic
concepts agree, accept the differences and be happy (4) Friendship is for righteousness and benevolence
rather than “wine and dine”; he treated his friends with sincerity and respect (5) Financial resources should
not be forgotten: he used funds within reason. At his 100th birthday, he published his book on: (A) Inherited
virtues: (i) Sound sleep (ii) Good temper (iii) Good memory (iv) Consistency (B) Acquired habits: (i) Regular
exercises and peace of mind (ii) Regular lifestyle (iii) Take more veggies; less meat (iv) Avoid uncooked
dietary items (v) Keep the feet warm; the head, cool!
