The TCM “Spleen & Stomach Concept”: Developing & Pioneering Work: an Interview with
Prof Chen Jiang, Director of the Spleen & Stomach Unit, Suzhou University of Traditional
Chinese Medicine
According to TCM principles, the stomach is for receiving food; the spleen, for transforming food to benefit our essence, qi, blood
and secretions; also enhance internal organs, meridians and the musculoskeletal system. Working well together, the spleen and the
stomach form the main source of qi and blood activities. With the “yin & yang” concept, the stomach reduces but the spleen, elevates:
their optimal reduction / elevation of “yin & yang” would benefit our internal organs. For the best spleen and stomach health, note:
(1) Learn the art of retreat (2) Have a regular and balanced diet; refrain from smoking and heavy drinking (3) Have a regular lifestyle.
On the future of the Concept, Prof Chen opines: (1) Must consolidate the classical input on spleen and stomach health; enhance TCM
implementation of the concept (2) Developing and pioneer work on the concept (3) Eventual application for implementing on disease
prevention and early management: the concept of treating the disease even before its establishment in our bodies. Above all, as our
metabolism derangement leads to senility, optimization of the spleen and stomach functions goes a long way.
