Seven Confusing Blood Test Results: How an Elderly Decipher His “Report Card”
An elderly Uncle Chang wasted time and funds by shopping around clinical laboratories over a borderline abnormal blood tumor
marker test result and had various unnecessary procedures performed, only to find that it was normal after all when repeated at the
same laboratory. Blood test items may be confusing and these seven top the list: blood sugar, lipid profile, liver & kidney functions,
BNP: a new heart failure index is sensitive but may well have false positive results, thyroid function and anemia. If a blood test is
“abnormal” try to: (1) Rule out any oversight on fasting / withholding relevant medications for the test (2) Repeat the same test at the
same laboratory upon a 10% or more deviation from normal; different laboratories have diverse test results even if testing on exactly
the same blood specimen; serial comparisons are best done in the same laboratory (3) Ask your doctor to ensure if there is really a
physical abnormality; perhaps to perform related tests in parallel or more specific tests; for the best definitive clinical diagnosis, better
correlate the clinical manifestations with the test results!
