Biological Therapy: a New Weapon to Combat Tumors: Interviewing Prof Liu Wah: Chief,

2 methods of immunity enhancement are feasible: “active immunity” is to enhance the body's own immunity mechanisms; “passive
immunity” is to deliver some already-enhanced cells by injection into the body: an "adoptive immunity". Similarly, the current strategy
of immunotherapy against cancer cells is also based on the adoptive principle, e.g., cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells that were
obtained from the cancer patients (peripheral blood) themselves (the autologous mode), would be processed in novel in vitro 3-D
models of tumor biology: a much more appropriate environment (than the 2-D ones) to process cells. Lymphocytes from the patient's
blood are incubated with anti-CD3 monoclonal antibodies, interleukin (IL)-2, IL-1, and interferon gamma (IFN-gamma). When injected
intravenously back to the patient, CIK cells recognize and kill tumor cells of minimal residual cancers. "Safety first" is mandatory
for such hi-tech infusion methods, as introducing contaminated substances into the body is disastrous. Nevertheless, with due care
and concern and attention to details, the prospects of such immunotherapy against cancer has good future prospects and should be
implemented more widely, albeit more research are also required.
