Focus on Contaminated Produce from “Plastic Greenhouses”
2011 saw contaminated veggies in Europe: an enterohaemorrhagic E.coli bacteria caused kidney failure and killed 16. For good yield,
farmers favor greenhouses using makeshift plastic films instead of glass. Problems are: (1) Harmful gasses produced in the intense sun
are trapped (2) Moisture trapped encourage more pests (3) With no bees for pollination, plant steroids are used to ensure fruit bearing.
Prof Wu Feng Zhi of the Northwest China Agriculture University opined the high temperature, humidity and evaporation induce vicious
cycles: (1) Chemical fertilizers accumulate; the soil is salinized; the low production demands even more chemical fertilizers, and so
on (2) Excessive pesticide residuals in soil permit more pests: demands even more pesticides. To rid pesticides on veggies: (1) Water
rinsing and soaking for 10 min for 2-3 times (2) Soak in brine (3) If feasible, try peeling to rid the residual pesticides (4) Use heat to
decompose pesticides (5) As pesticides disintegrate in time, for less perishable veggies, try storing first. Insecticides are poisons!
