The Scary Flesh-eating Bacteria
Flesh-eating bacteria syndrome or necrotizing fasciitis is a rare but very serious infection of the subcutaneous tissues and fascia:
necrosis ensues. The bacteria is commonly Streptococcus A. The infection spreads very rapidly. In Hong Kong, the bacteria usually
occur in sea water in summer. Bacteria enter with skin punctured by a sharp, pointed sea shell. As multiplication is rapid and much
toxin is produced, thrombi form inside blood vessels affecting the blood supply; large areas of necrosis ensue, causing pain, dark
blistered skin, fever, chills, hypotension, etc. Mortality within 12-24 hrs is 20-30%. Diabetics and liver disease sufferers are at high
risk. If you have unhealed wounds, avoid contact with sea water; wear thick rubber gloves when handling sea food; cook thoroughly all
sea food, especially shell fish; do not mix cooked and uncooked sea food. If being pricked by shell fish and there is redness, swelling,
fever and unusual pain, go to the hospital at once. No time is lost in awaiting bacteria cultures but modern MRI scans delineate tissues
involved before the debridement surgery for necrotic tissue – this is life saving if done promptly.
