Earliest Diabetes Prevention & Treatment: an Interview with Prof of Medicine Shi Seng
Ying, Sun Yat-Sen Hospital, Fudan University
As China’s affluence leads to more diabetics (59.3 M by 2025), common knowledge is vital: reasonable diet, exercises, no smoking nor
excessive drinking, etc. 93.7% are type II diabetes – often asymptomatic; but belated diagnoses beget complications, e.g., coronaries,
cerebro-vascular diseases; kidney failure, blindness, amputation, etc. Persons at risk: impaired glucose regulation (IGR), age >45;
obesity; BMI>28; family history; high-risk ethnic groups; history of babies >4 Kg at birth; pregnancy diabetes; hypertension; high
cholesterol; cerebro-vascular accidents; sedentary work, etc. A simple, direct way is to check the blood sugar; the Hba1c (reflecting
blood sugar levels for the past 3 months) is an alternative (not >6.5%) but may not rule out diabetes even if <6.5%. Have a healthy life
style; early management of IGR; prevent complications if already diabetic; if already with chronic complications of diabetes, ensure a
regular and comprehensive management. Note IGR is even more common (418 M, world, 2025) and could either be impaired fasting
glucose (IFG) or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT); may already affect your capillaries – take good care!
