Lymphatics & Health
Lymphatics have vessels for the lymph and nodes for filtering off organisms, cancer cells, etc. Cells are the lymphocytes (T cells or B
cells); T cells eradicate foreign cells, secrete cytokines (messengers), enable cellular immunity; B cells turn into plasma cells: secrete
humeral immunity antibodies – combat viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites, etc; neutralize poisons. Allergies (asthma, atopic eczema,
etc.) are over-active reactions; auto-immune diseases are inappropriate attacks on own cells. For cytokines, the T helper-1 (Th1) cells
secrete interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon-
γ
(IFN-
γ
): for delayed sensitivity reactions, cytotoxicity and cellular immunity. T helper-2
(Th2) cells secrete IL-4 and IL-5: enabling antibodies, immuno-globulin E (IgE) and humeral immunity. Lack of proteins may disable
functions, e.g., inadequate IL-2 and inappropriate proportion of Th1 and Th2; even antibody production to vaccination is suboptimal.
Too oily diets may reduce immunity. Vitamin C has antihistamine properties: reducing the response of histamine to immune reactions.
Too much vitamin E reduces IL-2 secretions. Consult your doctor if lymph nodes enlarge!
