The Dream Kingdom of Tango: Argentina
The director of the film, “The Secret in Their Eyes” used 127 minutes to capture the glamour of city life and the thought-provoking wilderness – all in
one go in Argentina. In the evenings, the Av Callao of Buenos Aires is the centre of upper class tango. Apart from the hearty wine gulping and feasting
on centimeter-thick beef from the Pampas of Argentina, the tango is the most outstanding culture of Argentina. Tango originated humbly in the
brothels frequented by numerous immigrants staying around the Rio de la Plata. The accordion-like bandoneon was made to play the tango, with its
deep melancholy tone enjoyed by the hard working immigrants. In Rio de la Plata, one can still witness the hundred-year old primitive pubs. By 1912,
tango was accepted and became popular in upper class society, spreading rapidly to New York, London and Paris. By 1920, Carlos Cardel, with his
beautiful voice, became the champion of the Argentine Tango. By 1946, under the active promotion by the Government of Peron, tango soon became
widely fashionable and, intentionally, a national pride. As bullfighting is symbolic for Spain, tango stands for Argentina!
