THE KILLER DUST-HAZE AND POISONOUS FOG
According to Prof He Yumin, Doctorate Supervisor, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Pharmacology and Academecian
Zhong Nanshan, hazy weather is also closely related to higher incidences of lung cancer, not just smoking. Other than the
"Chongqing Fog", we now have many more, due to small particle contamination (industry and car emissions), dust, sulphate,
nitrate, organic hydrocarbon compounds, causing cough, dizziness, tiredness, nausea and rapid worsening of respiratory diseases
and death. Stay indoors; wear a mask; close windows - room air is cleaner; keep warm as temperatures may vary unpredictably
and may even trigger off hypertensive crisis and strokes; persistent haze also worsens heart and lung diseases and may render
these critical. On returning home, wash the face and exposed skin; drink more water; take more fresh, vitamin-rich fruits; if
physically unwell, go to a hospital. Above all, governing bodies to work with the people for a low-carbon living, e.g., in our
coldest city of Harbin, low-emission "central" boilers are replacing individual coal-burning boilers with "tall chimneys" - a proud
achievement!
