For the Elderly, Cough is Not Absolutely Bad
Cough is not just a natural response to expel our phlegm - it may even be a "life saver". In the elderly, when sudden death occurs from
cardiovascular diseases, 50% to 70% are from heart attacks and half of these die within half an hour. In case chest pain or discomfort that
starts to spread into your arm and up into your jaw, call for help immediately. While awaiting and during a sudden abnormal heart rhythm or
arrhythmia, a conscious, responsive person coughing forcefully and effectively would maintain enough blood flow to the brain to remain
conscious until rescue arrives. Coughing often prevents "postural hypertension": fainting or dizziness due to a rapid rise from a sitting position.
When sudden arrhythmias occur during cardiac catheterization, the patient is also told to cough. Repeated, forceful coughing can help the
person stay conscious until the arrhythmia disappears or is treated. Though not the traditional CPR, blood flow is maintained by increased
pressure in the chest that occurs during forceful coughs. There are just a few minutes left after calling for help, keep calm - the survival instinct
