A
CRISIS
Recently,
the
Guangdong
Center for lnspection and Quaran-
tine had detected
in
the products
of
SK-ll
heavy metals
of
chromium
and neodymium at higher than the
local
normals.
The
General
Admin-
istration
of
Quality Supervision, ln-
spection and Quarantine (AQSIQ)
had
also
reported
this.
Chromium
may affect the skin, causing aller-
gic dermatitis;
neodymium
is
a
strong irritant for the eyes; a mod-
erate
irritant
for the
skin;
when
inhaled,
it
may even cause pulmo-
nary embolism (clots
in
the
arter-
ies of
the lungs) and
liver
damage.
SK-ll
had
65 sales counters
in
China
alone.
Hong Kong
also
found Clinique,
Lancome,
Christian
Dior
and
Estee Lauda products to
contain
heavy metals. The State
Ministry of Health of China
reported
increases
in
the annual
incidence
rates of skin
diseases
due to cos-
metics
- a
common skin
disorder.
Contact dermatitis due to cosmet-
ics accounted
lor
82.65"/o
of
565
cases reported in
China. Those
due
to
"general cosmetics"
ac-
counted
lor
57.9o/o;
"specialty
cosmetics", 31.3%;
make-shift
cos-
metics without brand-names,

8%.

are usually more serious and diffi-
cult
to
