THE
HEAVEN IN THE
DESERT:
DUBAI, TUNISIA
Dubai
is
the
most prosper-
ous
modern
city
in
the
Middle
East;
the
"7-star" dhow-shaped
Burj
AlArab
Hotel
is
just
off
the
seafront
of
Dubai. The security
was
tight
and
a
low
key was
kept
-
in
contrast
to
most other
glamorous hotels.
Despite the
super luxury,
the
Bedouin tra-
dition was
kept.
What
amazes
is
that
whirlpools were provided
in
suites; the hotel
Health Spa
and
Jacuzzi are of top
class,
even though water
is so
scarce
in
the
desert.
This
is feasible
through
recirculation
of
the
water, with only 6%
being
evaporated.
Built
along
the
hillside, the Tamerza Palace
is
a
hotel
that
has a very
tradi-
tional decoration
of
the
Berber
tribes.
Tamerza
is
in Southern
Tunisia, close to
the
border with
Algeria,
at
the edge
of
the
Sa-
hara Desert.
ln the
Sahara,
one's heart tends
to
become
purer
and
simplicity
of
the
mind
would
also prevail; the Tamerza
is thus a very
welcome
spot
right at
the
end
of
a tiring
jour-
ney
through the
Sahara. Adja-
cent to the
Tamerza
are
the
steps
of an
old Berber town;
on
climbing those steps, one
wit-
nesses
the
ruins and
experi-
ence
a
vision
of a
"poetic
melancholy". One
really
re-
freshes
at
the Tamerza!
