The
pancreas is
an
impor-
tant abdominal organ for
diges-
tion and supplying insulin.
Can-
cer
of
the
pancreas occurs at
a
rate
of 5.1

100,000; accounting

all
cancers but is
rap-
idly increasing
- in
Shanghai,
dur-
ing
the
last 20 years,
the
inci-
dence
rate rose
by
50%; the
peak
age, lowered from 60

ago) to around

of age.
Presentation
is
very
late:

are operable,
just
5-7.5%
suitable for curative
surgery.
The
1-year
survival
is
a
meager

With
distant spread,
the
median
survival
is
3-6 months.
Present-
ing
symptoms
are
vague: upper
abdominal
pain
/
discomfort; poor
appetite;jaundice
is
a sign of late
stage.
Risk
factors are high meat,
(especially
processed
meat)
intake;
heavy exposure
to
pesticides, dyes and chemicals
related to gasoline; heavy smok-
ing (2-2.5 times higher risk); dia-
betics
(2-4
times
the
risk);
chronic
inflammation
of
the
pancreas
(100
times
the
risk).
Many
pa-
tients
require
endoscopic
/
interventional radiology drainage
to
re-establish bile flow: prefer-
ably through the gut (ERCP);
or,
the
skin
(TCBD);
radiotherapy
with chemotherapy
or
anti-EGFR
"target
therapy"
are
tried, supple-
mented by
TCM
herbs.
