ELECTROMAGNETIC
POLLUTION:A
THREAT
T0
HUMAN
HEALTH
ln modern living, extremely
low
f
requency electro-magnetic
field (ELF
EMF)
is a
concern.
The
US
cancer incidence
rate
in-
creased
10-20%
from
1
940:
pos-
sibly
related
to
higher
EMF
exposure.
ln
1979,
Wertheimer
&
Leeper repofted higher leukemia
risk among
children living
near
very strong electric
f
ields.
Fortunately,
China's
rules
are
stricter
than
most countries.
Yet,
conflicts
of
interest
between
health
risks
and political
or eco-
nomical concern
are
to
be
avoided.
Before
f
urther
evidence,
ELF is
classified as "possible
hu-
man
carcinogen".
Conceptually,
these contaminations
diminish
very
rapidly with distance.
ln
industry,
as
distancing
is
not
feasible,
appropriate shields are
required.
As in
the
home,
the
most
powerful
electric
appliances
are
the electric carpets,
heaters
and air-conditioners,
try
not
to
cluster
them
together.
All color
TVs
are
watched
at a
distance of
3-4
meters;
youngsters
should
avoid
excessive
electronic
games; children and
pregnant
women should preferably
not
to
use
electric
blankets,
or,
turn
them
off
after warming the bed; if
working
long
hours in
front
of
monitors:
take
more
fruits
&
vegetables. The
future lies
in
studying
the
effect on genes
as
a
better
indicator
of
such
contamination.
