HOW EFFECTIVE ARE
HEALTH FOODS FOR THE
MENOPAUSE?
When women
reach
the
age
of
45 or
so,
the ovaries would stop
functioning and the menses would
also cease
-
the
menopause. Com-
mon
symptoms are flushing,
cold
sweats,
insomnia,
agitation,
bad
temper,
etc.
For
significant
symptoms, hormonal replacement
therapy (HRT) may be prescribed.
However,
it
is also good
to
learn
about some
of
these
alternatives:
(1)
lsoflavones.
These are
plant
derived, commonly soybean.
For
women
with
hot
flashes,
the Au-
thorities
advises
their use
in the
dosage range of 40-80 mg
daily,
otherwise, side effects occur.
(2)
Evening primrose
oil. These
are
from the oil of evening
primrose
seeds and
have been used for
menopause
hot flashes.
Feed-
backs are mixed and side etfects
are diarrhea and nausea.
(3)
Black
cohosh.
The
Authorities
recom-
mend limiting the use for
less
than
6 months as long-term side effects
are
not
well
documented.
For
those
with breast cancers, consult your
doctor
first. (4)
Dong quai. Often
used
for various
gynecological
conditions; those who
are
on blood
thinning preparations should
con-
sult your
doctor
first.
(5) Ginseng.
Another
common herb; consult
your doctor
if
you
are on blood
thin-
ning
preparations. One
cannot
be
too careful!
