THE MELODY
OF REBIRTH
Our
Chief
Editor
Mr
Fung
went
to
Harbin Medical
Sci-
ences University,
Heilongjiang
to interview
Prof
Xia Qiuming,
a
Master
of
Heart
Transplant.
On
26
Apr 2005, the Second
Hos-
pital
of
the
University
celebrated
the
13th
Anniversary
of
theirfirst
heaft
transplant patient
Mr
Yang
as
well as inaugurating the
pro-
posed National Day
of
Love.
Prof
Xia was extremely meticu-
lous and thorough;
he
had
thought
of
every
possible
contingency.
A lot
of
practice
and rehearsals were
required,
including
practicing
on
6 dogs.
The
heart transplant
team
was
also
enormous
-
over
100 medi-
cal professionals! lt was
small
wonder
that their patient
sur-
vived
the
longest
among
all Chi-
nese hospitals
first
embarking
on
such
transplants.
Prof Xia's
achievements are
comparable
with oversea centers
that
have
been
working on heart
trans-
plants
since
1905.
As
the
long-
est
survivors
are
all
from
Heilongjiang,
Prof
Xia's
relent-
less
effort and painstaking atten-
tion to
the
minutest
detail
have
finally
paid
off.
He has set
an
excellent example for all of
us.
