PREVENTION IS BETTER

CURE: PROBING
INTO CONSTITUTIONS
"One man's meat
is
other
man's poison". Different
human
constitutions account for diverse
effects on the body from similar
environmental conditions. Based
on abstract terms,
helpful
recom-
mendations
have long
been
made. Now, HLA (human leuko-
cyte antigen),
a
more objective
indicator
of
constitutions, may
be
"risk alleles" (genes)
or,
the "pro-
tective"
ones,
e.9.,
longevity
is
associated
with
HLA-A9
and
HLA-DR1 but
the
presence
of
HLA-A30
and
HLA-DRw9, with
progressive aging. Apart
from
its
relationship
with
nose cancer
susceptibility,
HLA
is
now
thought
to
be
associated
with risks
of
many other diseases, e.9.,
pso-
riasis
is
related
to
HLA-813
or
HLA-B1 7;
ankylosing spondylitis,
with
HLA-827,
rheumatoid
arthritis, with HLA
DR4,
chronic
active
hepatitis,
with
HLA-B17,
systemic
lupus erythematosus,
with
HLA-DR3. Of
great
interest
is
that Taiwan studies found
that
increase
of
HLA-B.4601 fre-
quency
was
observed
in
those
in-
fected by
SARS;
a further
in-
crease
was
seen
in
severe cases
- enabling
a
better understand-
ing
of
SARS
in
preparation for
its
possible
return.
