Zhong, the
bark
of
Euco-
mmia ulmoides
Oliv
(Ecom-
miaceae)
has
been used for
strengthening
the
internal organs,
invigorating
the
muscles and bones
as
well as
preventing
habitual
abortion. The decoction
and
tincture
of
the bark showed antihypertensive
effect;
the
leaves
also
had
similar
effect
in rats.
The extract
of
the
bark
prevented the decrease
of
sex
and
learning in chronically
stressed
mice.
Extracts
of
leaves improved
the collagen synthesis in rats.
lt
was
thought
Du
Zhong
is
active on sex
gland function, heart and
blood
vessel, blood pressure
lowering
(antihypertensive), diuretic effects,
sedative and pain killing
effects,
relaxation
of
the womb, antibiotic
and rheumatoid arthritis.
clinically,
it
has been
employed
for
(1)
lumbago, bone regeneration
and
even numbness of
limbs. (2) Rheu-
matoid arthritis and sciatica.
(3)
Paralysis,
especially
"lower-motor
neurone" ones, muscular
dystrophy
- applicable if of
the
"kidney defi-
ciency"
type.
(4) Poor sex function
and
urinary
frequency.
(5) "Kidney"
deficiency. (6)
Hypertension.
(7)
Prolapse
