The

worldwide pandemics of
in-
fectious
diseases
were
really
devastating. Vaccines and antibiotics
were successful,
yet, the ability
of
microbes becoming resistant
or
mutat-
ing
to escape recognition
by
vaccines
were also
serious.
Old
pathogens,
e.9., resistant tuberculosis
bacteria
making a new combat that may
outper
form current antibiotics;
similarly,
malaria, diphtheria, cholera
and the
bubonic plague are all making a
new
combat. Brand-new infections also
demand much more effective controls,
e.9.,
AIDS,
Ebola,
dengue hemorrhagic
fever,
E.
coli
0157,
"mad cow disease"
and SARS,
etc.
All these
new
and
old
infections
not only kill large
numbers but
also affect the economy tremendously.
It is
highlighted
that,
this Century
is
al
high risk
of
having another
serious
outbreak, especially
as
the
last world-
wide influenza outbreak
was
26
years
ago,
it
was about time for another seri-
ous
outbreak. WHO specialists
has
also
warned
that a
number of poorly-antici-
pated infectious diseases may
well
appear
in
this Century; Chinese experts
now
warned
on
the highest
probability
of epidemics of influenza, encephalitis
B,
dengue fever, malaria and kala-azar
("black lever"). Despite
hi-tech
developments,
e.9.,
the Chinese Acad-
emy
of
Sciences working
with
Genetastix
in the
US
on
SARS
antibodies,
TCM
must be added to the
modern armamentarium; even the
WHO endorses enhanced research on
this
role.
