PREVENTING OSTEOPOROSIS:
HELPTHYSELF
The
incidence rate of osteoporo-
sis
(fragile bones)
gradually
increases
with
age,
doubling every 5 years after
50;
incidence
for
post-menopausal
women
is a
few
folds
higher than man.
The earliest symptom is usually
bone
ache or low back
pain.
There may even
be bone
fractures
or
a
hunchback and
shortening
of
the stature. Thus, the eld-
erly should have
a
self-help strategy
for
prevention
of
osteoporosis. The
living
environment for the elderly should
be
safe
so as
to minimize
falls. Take a
well-
balanced
diet
that
is
rich
in
calcium (milk
and
milk products)
and fresh,
as fresh
foodstuffs are richer
in
vitamins;
avoid
smoking and drinking. Outdoor activi-
ties
help
to
generate
vitamin
D
for bet-
ter
calcium absorption. Psychologically,
cultivate an optimistic viewpoint - too
much pessimism is bad
for
health.
ln
case
backache
sets
in, consult your
doctor; if required, change to
a
firmer
"orthopedic" mattress; use
a
low pillow
because
high pillows
tend
to bend the
back more. After the acute stage of the
backache
is over, try
to get
out
of
bed
soonest,
as
prolonged
bed rest
may
weaken the bones
further.
Always keep
the back straight, especially when
lift-
ing heavy objects; fit corsets for
extra
support if required.
Note
the availabil-
ity
of
modern X-ray examination for
osteoporosis,
e.9.,
the
"single photon"
examination
is
safe
and
reliable.
