PREVENTION OF
HIGH
BLOOD
PRESSURE: FROM BABE
ONWARDS
High Blood Pressure (BP)
or
hypertension may
also
be found in the
very
young. Unlike the
vast
maiority
of
adult-type hypertension that has
no
apparent cause (primary hypertension),
high BP
in
children are mostly second-
ary to hereditary conditions, e.9.,
of
the
heart and blood vessels,
or,
due
to
hormonal disturbances, or,
kidney
diseases.
The
BP
tends to be high,
in
the infant, they
may
cry
a
lot, scratch
the
head
or slap the
head
with their
hands. Unnoticed,
they
deteriorate
rapidly,
e.9., into
convulsion
or
even
coma.
The
BP
increases
normally with
age
-
the systolic (upper)
BP
is
usu-
ally 80 + (age
x
2) mm
Hg;
the diastolic
(lower)
BP,
around
213
of
the systolic.
The
past 20
years'research
found
these
factors:
(1) Genetic
-
accounts for
60-80%; those with family
history
should check BP early (2)
Personality
-
aggressive "type A" personality
is
more prone
(3) Obesity
-
overweight
children are
related to
a
few metabolic
diseases, including
40%
having hyper-
tension (4)
Diet
-
the habit
of exces-
sive salt consumption starts from the
newborn; low-sodium content breast
milk
is
preferred
to
milk
powder
(5) Exercises
-
effective in prevention
hypertension, even
in
the adults.
lt
pays
to develop a
relaxed
and
easygoing
personality, learn to avoid unnecessary
pressures
and
strains; avoid obesity
and
excessive
salt;
take
regular
exercises.
Those with family history
should be screened early on.
