the sheep
from
a breast cell of
a
6-year-old ewe in
1996
at
the
Roslin lnstitute. Coming from an
adult being, it was an unprecedented
achievement. Despite
the
normal
lite
span of
13
years, Dolly
had
to be
put
to
death
at
the age of
6,
due to a progres-
sive lung disease. Apparently,
cloned
cells start
to
age from the age of the
"mother". ln fact, Dolly's cells had
se-
nility
signs
by
3
years old; by
51/2yearc,
Dolly
already
had
arthritis.
Deaths of
the
cloned animal were extremely frequent,
with deaths occurring from oversized
organs
or
bodies
or
other abnormalities.
The
mother bearing the fetus
thus
had
an
unacceptably
high
risk. Dolly's pre-
mature death
lurther affirmed
immatu-
rity of
cloning.
