DIABETES AND PREGNANCY
Diabetes
is
more
common
amongst pregnant mothers,
mainly
because
of the
drastic
hormone
changes
that
are associated
with
pregnancy. As diabetes during preg-
nancy can affect the
baby,
a glucose
tolerance
tests
may be required to
detect mother's sub-clinical diabetes-
taking of
50
grams
of
glucose
by
mouth
and
then
a
series of
blood
sugar
level
tests taken. Diabetes
in
pregnant
mothers
is
treated very
strictly and
close
collaboration between the doctor
and
the mother
is
required.The mother must
also control the diet very
carefully. On
the one hand, she
has
to get adequate
nutrition, on the other,
she
must also
control her diabetes. The advice from a
qualified dietician
may
well be required.
ln
general,
the
weight gain should
not
be more than
1.5
Kg per month and not
more
than 9
Kg
should
be gained
during the whole pregnancy.
Usually,
the
requirement
lor
insulin increases
after the
first
trimester; during which
period, the
kidney
threshold
for
glucose
also lowers
so
that more glucose would
appear
in
the
urine.
Hence, check blood
sugar
level
lor monitoring
instead.
When
close
to
or during
delivery,
the
anti-diabetic
agents are often changed
to
insulin. Some obstetricians recom-
mend
diabetic
mothers
to
be admitted
at 35th week to await
delivery, for
the
best
results.
