Prof. Zhou Jung Ying has
been
working as
a
traditional Chinese medi-
cine practitioner for more than
50
years
and has
a lot of
milestone
accomplishments.
He
endorsed
the
post-1997 policy of developing
Tradi-
tional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
in
Hong
Kong,
but
thought that the historical tra-
dition
had
to
be
enhanced,
so
that nov-
elty can then follow. ln
this
modern
world,
a
systematic legal infra-structure
was also vital for
TCM.
Modern scien-
tific
methods should be employed for
TCM research but Western medicine
methods should never be employed,
otheruise, TCM would slowly
die
down.
The symptom and individual orientated
approach
of
TCM
must be maintained
whereas the strictly disease-orientated
treatment of Western medicine should
be avoided.
The
so-called
"lntegration
between Western and TCM" should be
much more than using both methods
of treatment but specific points
of
integration,
e.9., learning
and more
radi-
cal amalgamation
of
the two
are vital.
However,
no
integration can
replace
the
academic development
of
TCM concen-
trating on the original theory
of TCM.
Even
TCM medication research should
lollow traditional principle and clinical
practice; compartmentalized quantifica-
tion should
be
avoided. Lastly, myths
like
avoiding
all poisonous
TCM
medi-
cation and pre-operative use
of TCM
medication have no grounds
-
even
arsenic
is
good for leukaemia.
