CHANGINGTHE
FUTURE OF
MANKIND
ln
the
past
40-60 years, genetic
studies
have come
to the
molecular
level and found the component
of the
gene
to
be DNA, a double helix with
well-designed placement of base pairs
in between. ln the nucleus of the
hu-
man cells, there are 23 pairs of chro-
mosomes
-
these are the containers
of
the
DNA. Together, they determine the
colour
of the
hair, body height
and
behaviour characteristics. Genes
can
make exact copies
of
the genetic code.
More importantly, genes
are
related
to
many diseases, e.9., senile dementia
is related
to
many
changes
of the
genes
and cancer
is
clearly the direct effect of
sudden genetic changes. When
more
is
understood about
the
disease
mechanism,
cell
differentiation,
development, and ageing, death,
etc,
the mystery of
life
would gradually
re-
veal
itself
.
Even
the management
of
the
patient become patient-specific
-
a
step
beyond
disease-specilic
management
of the present. The greatest problem
is
ethical,
just
like when
cloning
of
humans
was
first available 3 years
ago. The
"gene
quotient'
may well
jeopardise job
and even
insurance
coverage
opportunities.
