SIGNS OF
ORAL CAVITY CANCER
Warning signs
that
permit
earlier
diagnosis of
oral
cavity cancer must not
be
ignored.
Consult your dental sur-
geon
if
there
is
an
ulcer
that
fails
to
heal
after 2 weeks
-
many of these ulcers
are due to sharp teeth
or
dentures, etc.

there
is leukoplakia (white patch) on
the
mucosa
that is often
due
to
pro-
longed smoking, excessive drinking, too
much spicy
food
or
poorly fitting
dentures, etc., more harm than good
results
with
using strong solutions to
"bum" away these leukoplakia patches.
As
5%
of
these may
become
cancerous, excision
is
worthwhile.
Red
patches are commonly
of
unknown
causation; a biopsy
is
considered
if
the
red patch persists for
2
or more weeks.
Jaw stiffness
is
often due
to
tightness
of
the jaw joint,
otheruise
suspect can-
cers causing soft
tissue
cancer or oral
mucosal cancers; unexplained loose
teeth that come in
a
few together
are
also
suspicious. Facial palsies
and
also
numbness are also warning
signs.
For
all
of these,
the opinion
of
your doctor
or dental surgeon should
be sought
promptly.
