SLEEP
DISORDERS
OFTHE
ELDERLY
Elderly patients
often
have
problems
of
sleeping:
they
require
a
longer time
to fall
asleep; on waking
up
at night, they also
have
difliculties
in going
back
to
sleep again; they
tend to sleep short hours at night
but
feel sleepy
in
the
day time;
their
sleep
is
not sound enough
and
insomnia
is quite common. Despite
all
these,
the
elderly
should avoid
taking
sleeping pills, especially on
a
long-
term
basis.
Taking increasing doses of
these drugs
ii
very dangerous
in the
elderly
-
the larger the dose, the longer
the duration
of
usage,
the
greater
would be the complications. Barbitu-
rates
are the worst, as they
may
even have
serious
withdrawal
symptoms including marked
anxiety,
anorexia
or
even convulsions. Other
milder sleeping pills have
relatively
less withdrawal symptoms
but
still
can
never
be
ignored. Hence,
in
managing sleep disorders
of the elderly,
it
is
better
to find
out
the
reason for
the
insomnia
and
manage accordingly
rather
than relying on sleeping
pills
all the time.
