Yu Yan-Bei
The one time
that
raised fear
among Hong Kong people was
the
HSN1
virus
among poultry
which
in-
fected
1
8 persons and 6
of
them
died
as
a
result.
The Hong Kong Govt.
ex-
terminated all
1.3 million chickens in a
humane way and stopped the further
spread
of the
disease
in
time.
Up till
the
printlng
of
this issue no
new
cases of
such
disease has been
found. lt
looks
like
the threat
of
this poultry influenza
has
completed its
phase and
the
resi-
dents of H.K. can give a sigh
of
relief.
Although the H5N1 virus was first
discovered
in
H.K.
there
had
been
serveral occurrences
of
poultry influ-
enza
in
the world. For examples,
in
1959 in
Scotland, in
1983
in
New
Jer-
sey
and
in Maryland States,
there
had
been cases
of poultry
influenza that
caused the death of
a
large number
of
chickens.
The local
governments
adopted the policy
of
exterminating
chickens and
put
a
stop to the
epidemic.
At
those times, the poultry inlluenza did
not atfect mankind and the virus was
not
the
H5N1
type. The H5N1 virus that
occurred
in
H.K. not only
spreads
among chickens
but
also
attacks
human beings,
a rare
phenomenon that
happened lor the first time
in
the world.
Therefore,
it
has aroused attention
globally. For this matter, the Chairman
of
our
Association,
Mr Vincent
W.H.
Chou emphasized
the
importance of
"Prevention is Better than Cure" at
the
interview
by
Wen Wei
Po's
journalist.
We
have summarized
the
main
points
of
the
interview for
bur
readers so
that
they can have
a
proper understanding
of
poultry influenza.
ln
fact,
the
best
method
is
nothing more than to
increase
one's
boby energy
and
raise one's
immune
ability.
When
preventive
measures
are taken properly,
the
attacks of diseases can be prevented.
