CAN FETAL BRAIN
TRANSPLANTATION MAKE A
FULL
RECOVERY OF
CONSCIOUSNESS
FROM
''PLANT
MAN'
A
recently published newspaper
in
China reported that
a
patient with so-
called
"plant human" syndrome was
miraculously restored to receptiveness
and responsiveness
by
fetal
brain
trans-
plantation.
The
syndrome
is a perma-
nently
disabling
brain death syndrome
with irreversible unconsciousness, and
can be diagnosed by irreceptiveness
and irresponsiveness on the basis of
complete abolition of all brainstem and
cerebral activity
and
isoelectric (flat)
EGG
(electroencephalogram).
This
news raised the question that
whether
or
not
the
mental
function
of
a patient
with brain death syndrome can be
re-
stored
by
the
use of
fetal transplanta-
tion.
As
to the patient reported
in
the
newspaper, we don't know the severity
and other conditions about his illness
in
detail.
ln general, some
of
the
pa-
tients
may quickly pass through
an
acute hypoxia phase and proceed to
make a
full
recovery; when improve-
ment
takes
place, as
it
usually
does
in
the patients with a
less
damaged brain,
consciousness may be regained and
then certain types
of
movement
be-
comes
manifest.
However,
if
there
is
a
long period of hypoxia and
cerebral
ischemia, the most vital organ such as
the
brain may be destroyed due to se-
vere
brain
damage such
as
hypoxia,
brain injury, stroke, encephalitis
in
toxication with carbon monoxide and
toxious drugs,
leaving
the
individual
essentially dead
as
far as his psychic
life
and personality are
concerned,
while heart action and circulation
are
maintained. Thus,
usually when the
syndrome of cerebral death occurs the
outlook
for
recovery of
consciousness
is hopeless.
