MYOCARDITIS PHOBIA
Myocarditis is most likely caused
by
viral
infections.
When the heart
is
affected, only
transient
ST-T wave ab-
normalities
in
the EKG
(electrocardio-
gram) are
observed.
Sometimes,
myocarditis may develop either during
or several weeks after an instance of
respiratory
illness.
ln such a case,
it
may lead to acute
fatal
heart
failure or
long termcardiac arrhythmia.
Even
though acute
viral
myocarditis
may become
a chronic
ill-
ness,
for
most patients, it
is
most likely
that this disease will recover by
itself.
For
example, early diagnosis
and
treat-
ment make good prognosis for patients
with a history of upper respiratory fe-
brile illness, viral nasopharyngitis, ton-
sillitis or
enteritis.
An early
isolation
of
viruses from
the stool,
pharyngeal
washings
and a
change
in the specific
viral antibody
have also clinically
proven
to
be helpful.
