The
placenta
is
a
remarkable or-
gan.
lt
takes form, develops
into a
large
and complex structure, engages
in in-
tricate biologic process and
becomes
senescent
in a
nine month
period.
Dur-
ing this
time,
it
serves as
a
mean of in-
terchange
of many
substances between
the fetal and maternal blood
streams.
It
has many activities which are in part
comparable
to
those
of
the
gastrointestinal, respiratory, circulatory
and urinary tracts.
lt
is an active bio-
chemical laboratory
in
which endocrine
substances
and
enzymes
are
pro-
duced. The
readers are referred to the
present paper
for
understanding
in
de-
tail the biological activities
of
the pla-
centa
and
the potential
use of
sheep
placenta preparations as
a
tonic medi-
cine.
