TRADITIONAL
CHINESE
HERBS
USED
ALONE
OR
COMBINED
WITH
CHEMOTHERAPY AND
IMMUNOLOGIC
AGENTS
FOR
GASTRIC
CARCINOMA
Unfortunately,
clinical
de-
scriptions of gastric carcinoma
re-
late almost exclusively
to
late
manifestations and
are
not
of
much help to
the
physician who
wishes
to
make
the
diagnosis
early
to
effect a
cure
by complete
excision.
Although there has
been a
decline
in
the
reported
death
rate
of
gastric carcinoma
in
some
countries, world figures
including
China indicate that cancer
of
the
stomach remains a major
health
problem.
ln late cases of gastric carci-
noma,
anemia,
malnutrition and
cachexia can
be
found frequently,
and chemotherapy may actually
shorten
the
patient's life through
toxic effect on many other tissues
including bone
marrow.
The
au-
thor of this article investigated the
beneficial effect
of
traditional Chi-
nese herbs in
the
treatment
of
gastric
carcinoma.
These
herbs
when used alone can acts
an
immunostimulant. As an
adjuvant
supplement to chemotherapy the
chemotherapeutic agents
used
can be
in
smaller dosage. The re-
sults of the study revealed that
higher survival rates after ortho-
dox treatment complemented with
herlcs
can
be
expected even
in
late
cases of gastric carcinoma.
Other
beneficial
effects may include im-
provement
of
symptoms and
a
slow down of cancer metastasis
etc.
However further studies are
needed
to
draw a definited con-
clusion.
