ln general, the probability of
curing
cancer
is
directly
related
to
early detection of
the
malignancy.
lncreasing emphasis
is
therefore
given to the education of
physi-
cians, public health group, and the
lay
populataon
concerning cancer
detection.
Research efforts to de-
vise
better methods
for
early de-
tection of cancer are
now under
way.
ln addition, much of cancer
prevention
is implicit
in
the
under-
standing of etiology and epidemi-
ology.
A
number of factors is
re-
sponsible for the development of
malignant disease, e.9.,
genetic
(multiple
polyposis
of the
colon,
which leads to colon carcinoma as
the
patient's age
advances),
virus
(hepatitis
virus infection
is
common
in
patients
with liver
cancer),
chemical
(the most
significant
es-
tablished carcinogen
in man's en-
vironment
at
the moment
is
ciga-
rette
smoke).
Such substances as
food additives,
air
pollutant, and
cosmetics are among
others.
lt
is
important
to
know
if
you
are
at
in-
creased
risk
and to apply the
ap-
propriate detection techniques to
monitor and
to
follow up leads
that
suggest cancer, such as, weight
loss,
change
in
bowel
habits,
bleeding, and persistent ulceration,
which
should
bring yourself
to
the
physicians.
Needless to say, self-
education regarding cancer
risks
obviously is highly important to ef-
fective
prevention of cancer.
