(HGF) Reseanah
Hepatocyte
growth factor
(HGF),
originally
found
in
the serum
of
partially hepatomized
rat
and rat
platelets,
is a
most
potent
mitogen, motogen
and
morphogen
for
cells
in
vitro.
HGF
was
found
to
be
a
heterodimer composed of
a 69-KDa
a-subunit
and
a
34KDa
lJ
-subunit.
Exogeneous
HGF
markedly stimulates
prolifer-
ation
of
hepatocytes
and
strongly protects
the
integrity of
hepatocytes against
hepatitis
in
the
mouse
liver after
various
insults. HGF
strongly
inhibits proliferation
of
a
large number
of
tumor
cells originating
from
hepatoma, melanoma and squamous
cell
carcinoma, both in vitro and
vivo.
