Recently, it
was
reported that
two
Singapore
vice
premiers,
Li
Xian-long and Wang
Ding-chang,
were
sffiering from
malignant
lymphoria. This nefrs drew
our -attention. Malignant
lymphoma
is
ciivibeO
into
two
kinds:
Hodgkin's disease
and
non-Hodgkin's
lymphoma
(NHL).
The
present paper
is-
mainly
concerned-with
NHL,
since'it
occurs more
freq'uently.
The
NHL usually
affects
patients
with
one
or
several
lymph nodes.
lf the
cancer
cells
are
i-estricted
in
a
few
lymph
nodes,
the
condition is called
localized
lymphoma.
'
'However,75oh
of
the
malignant lymphoma
is of
the
generalized
type at
least;
the
abnoimal cells can be
found
in
the
ilrtrote
lymph'a'tic
system and some other
organs.
On
the
other
hand, clbssifications can also be made according
to the
symptoms
and
characteristics
of
lymphocytes revealed
by
lymph
node
biopsy.
For
treatment, th6
main approaches are radiotherapy
and
chemirtherapy.
To
minimize
the toxicity and side
effects and to
enhance the therapeutic effectiveness,
it
is
necessary
to.use drugs
of
biological
response
modifier
(BRM)'
such
as
. interferon,
polysaccEaride
pdptide
(PSP),
etc..
With
the
develop-ment of
bdv'anced
medical
techniques, immunotherapy
will be
a
breakthrough
in
the treatment of
NHL.
