The Healing Potential of Learning Chinese Characters
Once, Meany, a pupil in Philadelphia, injured his brain during a car accident brain and became dyslexic: unable to read texts. As
Chinese characters are symbolic and graphic, a clinical psychologist there tried teaching Meany Chinese characters and language. After
solid learning and practice, Meany could read English again as prompted by matching Chinese characters side by side – significantly
better than just after the accident. When we read English through memorizing spelt words, we use only the left brain hemisphere, but,
reading Chinese characters requires both hemispheres, with mutual enhancement. Probably because of this, Chinese people have
a lower incidence rate of dyslexia. In US public schools, ~4% of pupils have dyslexia, with difficulties and disappointments during
learning, eroding their self-confidence and affecting their academic achievements. Thus, reading Chinese characters may actually help
to utilize fully both sides of the brain, enhancing kids’ intelligence, thinking power and even their cognitive development. In the elderly,
it may even prevent senile dementia.
