Three Items of Eye Care for Infants & Kids
Firstly, babies’ eyeballs may have a squint, with the eyes looking towards the nose instead of straight ahead. By 2-3 months, try to
prevent squints by widening the visual scope through: (1) Having more than 1 dangling toy objects over the cradle and >1.5M from
the baby (2) Changing the cradle position (3) Picking up the baby often (4) Maintain just a dim night light. For established squints, try
placing attractive toy objects away from the squint direction. Severe cases require an ophthalmologist opinion. Operative correction is
considered for older kids. Secondly, as babies’ eyes are not yet fully developed before 1 year old, encouraging them to learn walking
my strain the lens accommodation muscles and predispose to shorted-sightedness. Thirdly, Styes on the eye lids are due to blockage
and infection of the Meibomian glands. Apart from the usual hot compress method, the Author advocates simply piercing (aseptic
technique!) the lower pole of the earlobe as an effective method for early styes. Never prick a stye directly!
