The Annual Body Health Check is a Must
City hospitals offer body checks, e.g., the Author’s Hospital offering annual body checks for the thousand odd staff found cancers,
with a surprising trend of increasing discovery of, e.g., thyroid and lung cancers. There is now an ultrasound dedicated for thyroid use
and all workers >40 have a free CT thorax annually. This year, there are more than 20 cancers found, one of these is in his seventies,
being the retired Deputy Superintendent of the Hospital, with no symptoms whatsoever and still working in a society-run clinic. Of
the 12 cases of lung cancers found, 10 are female, 3 of which are still in their forties. Annual CT thorax is obviously more sensitive
than annual chest X-rays for picking up early lung cancers. Another female staff discovered an early benign meningioma in her brain
coverings – successfully treated by Gamma Knife at the Huashan Hospital, Shanghai. Thyroid diseases are also frequent; could be
related to unnecessary iodine supplements on top of abundant dietary iodine in coastal regions. The annual physical is a must!
