Why Does Alcohol Sponging Cause Death
At times, when medications seems unable of lowering the high fever of a small kid, parents may try the use of alcohol sponging to
lower the body temperature more promptly. Nevertheless, a kid had died from multi-organ failure due to the mistaken use of industrial
alcohol that contains, not just ethanol but also methanol: the very toxic alcohol, leading to multi-organ failure, toxicities to the nerves
of especially the central nervous system causing headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, blindness, delirium, coma and eventual death.
Even ethanol designated for medical use must also be well diluted to 25-30% so as to avoid undue irritation of the kid’s tender skin
and drunkenness. In fact, it is far safer to cool down in room temperature of 21-23
o
C and avoiding excessive clothes and using a cool,
wet towel over the forehead, lower neck, armpits and groins. Another simple but effective way is to immerse the small kid in water that
is only 3-4
o
C (but not more) lower than the body temperature for a short while then take away from the water but try not to wipe dry:
letting the water dry by itself on the body surface would ironically help cooling down; on the other hand, direct blowing with a fan or
air-conditioning may cause too sudden temperature drops and this is deemed to be too drastic.
