A Sleepy Kid Grows Taller
For a growing kid, environmental factors may also affect their stature up to 20-30%, especially diseases and nutrition: better take a
well-balanced diet and to regulate the sleep-wake cycle, especially as physical exercises and adequate sleep are both vital for best
stature. Cretinism (pathologically short in stature) is due to deficiency in thyroid hormone secretion; dwarfism, deficiency in growth
hormone (but intelligence is unaffected). After the age of one and a half years, growth hormone takes charge of the kid’s growth;
after the age of 10 in girls (12 in boys), sex hormones take over. During sleep, growth hormone secretion is trebled, with a peak at
approximately 70 minutes after falling asleep. For kids aged 1-3, 10-12 hours of sleep are required; for 4-7, no less than 10 hours; for
10 or over, 8 hours of sleep. Adults’ “night owl” habits must never be taken up by growing kids; instead, a decent sleep environment
and ambience at around 9 at night are called for: always turn off or dim the lights by then in order to stimulate the secretion of
melatonin that is good for sleep promotion; avoid watching over-exciting TV shows then; even excessive conversations should also be
