Screening for Lung Cancer by Low-dose CT Scan
A large municipal hospital had a program of free annual body checks that had discovered by chest radiograph staff having lung cancers
but, unfortunately, with stages still too late for radical surgery to be done. Thus, three years ago, low-dose CT thorax took the place
of chest radiograph. Since then, three staff had been found to have early stage lung cancers that were <1 cm in size and, all are still
surviving well till now after minimally-invasive surgeries being done. Lung cancer in our Country is a very important cause of death;
1/3 of the world’s death from lung cancers occurs in our Country; the incidence is also rapidly rising, with a total of 650,000 new
cases each year. Unfortunately, most are discovered late and not feasible for radical surgery. In large cities where haze is common, its
incidence is even higher. Factors for late discovery are: (1) Symptoms of early lung cancers, e.g., cough, fever and chest pain are non-
specific (2) With the large capacity of the lungs, when a small lung cancer occurs, virtually no shortness of breath is reported (3) As the
low-dose CT thorax is not only low in radiation but also lowers lung cancer mortality by 20%, it should replace chest radiographs for
screening lung cancers.
