The Mystery of Gua Sha Unveiled
“Sha” is taken to mean an imbalance and subsequent discomfort inside our body due to obstruction of our channels. Our skin has a
very important role of being responsible for receiving exterior messages and then to transmit such messages to the relevant tissues and
organs inside our body for achieving a kind of self-regulating mechanism for our best health. Thus, “gua sha” is a traditional Chinese
non-medicinal healing method that, initially, was deemed useful to relieve heat stroke syndrome. However, in the light of modern
medicine, “gua sha” is now considered as being able to relieve the “exterior syndrome”, akin to using, e.g., diaphoresis (inducing
sweating) to eliminate pathogenic factors; to increase the local temperature of the skin and muscles underneath; to promote the flow
of “qi” and blood in our channels. After gua sha, bruises on our skin usually recovers in 3-5 days; local pain lasts for 2-3 days; there
may also be a transient low-grade fever. Contraindications are: the elderly, infirm, local injury, diabetes, heart disease, hepatitis, cancer,
hemophilia, any bleeding tendencies, any skin lesions, pregnancy, menstruation, profuse vaginal discharge, etc. After gua sha, keep
warm; above all, never do it yourself!
