Never Take Juvenile Diabetes Lightly
In kids, the more labile diabetes type I is commonest; even though type II is also getting commoner. Difficulties of managing are due
to non-specific symptoms: excessive urine, thirst, increased appetite but weight loss; infective episodes complicating diabetes are
also treated “as is”, unless family history of diabetes is available. Compared with adults, kids are: (1) Less compliant on drug taking
and checking blood glucose levels (2) More active physically: glucose control is better but may be too low if anti-diabetic drugs are
coupled with inadequate food intake (3) Greediness hampers glucose control. On physical exercises: (1) Choose the most appropriate
mode, avoid over exertion (2) For kids with type I diabetes, avoid if: neuropathy / retinopathy / cardiovascular complications / cough &
cold / blood sugar >/=15mmol/L / ketone in the urine (3) Choose mild exercises, e.g., slow running or swimming, etc. (4) Take special
care of the feet to avoid the dreaded “diabetic foot”. As kids are less disciplined, always bring along sweets for emergency low glucose:
sweating, weakness, rapid heart beats, etc.); carry a card with disease and contact details. Take extra care when managing juvenile
diabetes!
