THE KNOW-HOW OF LEG BATH IS NOT TRIVIAL
Leg bath has a long history in China. To increase leg circulation, add warm water in a plastic bucket up to the level of the calves;
soak for half an hour, eg., after a day's hard work. Do it consistently to live longer; A good time for leg bath is before retiring; for
the elderly, 4-5 pm is also appropriate. If feasible, take some sweetened ginger tea. Be careful to avoid scalding: add hot water
gradually. Aim at whole body sweating. Avoid prolonged soaking or too high a temperature - one may feel chest discomfort or
dizzy. High water temperature induces vessel dilatation of the leg so that too much blood goes to the legs. In this case, shorten
the time and lower the temperature. If anaemic, hematinics should be taken. For diabetics, massaging the legs and feet after
soaking is more appropriate. As the heat would increase the absorption of added ingredients, it is better not to add drugs into the
water. Never add salt, otherwise swelling may result. Internationally, the work of William Fitzgerald on foot reflexology and
massage is well known. Even such publications hail the addition of herbs. Nevertheless, the opinion of your TCM physician
should be sought.
