SWINE FLU & OUR NEW CHALLENGE
Gutierrez of Mexico: the first person to die in the Swine flu epidemic, was the modern-day "Typhoid Mary" as she had spread the
Swine Flu to many others. The H1N1 is a RNA virus; pathogenic viruses are of types A, B and C and are designated according
to their surface antigens H (haemaglutinin) and N (neuraminidase). In 1918-19, the Spanish flu due to influenza A virus was the
most severe pandemic with the highest number of known flu deaths: 22 million people died worldwide. After that, research
workers made a very intensive effort to widen and enhance the scope of basic science investigations in order to conquer
pandemics much more effectively. By 1885, a French scientist Pasteur developed the first (rabies) vaccination; in 1921, Bacillus
Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine against tuberculosis; by 1928, Fleming discovered the first antibiotic. Following the whooping
cough vaccine, the eradication of small pox and polio offered successful milestones. However, the indiscriminate use of antibiotics
has induced resistant strains. More recently, the Ebola virus produces a hemorrhagic fever killing hundreds in Africa. The battle
is far from over!
