UNDAUNTED
BY THE
ARDUOUS
ROAD:
INTEGRATING WESTERN &
TCM
TO TURN
THE ''KEY"
TO
LIFE & AGING:
INTERVIEW WITH
ACADEMICIAN,
PROF SHEN
ZIYIN
Prof Shen Ziyin,
an
Academi-
cian of
the
Chinese Academy
of
Science, has devoted
4
decades
to
the
integration
of
Western
and
TCM.
Graduated from the Shang-
hai Medical College
in
1952,
he
also
mastered
TCM
at
the
Huashan Hospital, contributing
extensively in integrating Western
and
TCM.
He
advocates
"diagno-
sis based on syndrome" and
"dif-
ferent diseases treated with
the
same method".
His
TCM concept
of
"kidney yang" deficiency
has
scientific basis: deficiency
in
uri-
nary
1
7
-hy
droxycorticoste roid
is
due
to
a
disturbance
in
the
hypo-
thalamus-pituitary-adrenal
axis.
This
had been
tested in
7
Prov-
inces
ol
China and
the
Guoshun
Hospital, Japan
-
the
fault
being
in
the
hypothalamus or
above.
This
not only
endorses
the validity
of
the
TCM
"syndrome-based" practice
but also
enhanced integration.
Recently, he is researching on the
relationship between
"kidney
yang"
deliciency and aging, especially by
conditioning cells
with
an exces-
sive "Fas"
molecule. Moreover,
"re-
inforcing kidney" herbs can
en-
hance
the
manifestations of
the
gene of CRF
in
the hypothalamus.
Undaunted,
Prof
Shen treads
the
long and
arduous
road ahead!
