THE ART OF
CHECKING
BLOOD
PRESSURE
ln the clinic or hospital, all pa-
tients'
blood pressure is invariably
checked as
a
routine.
However,
there are different ways
of
docu-
menting
the
blood pressure. The
classical mercury column
"sphyg-
momanomete/' to determine blood
pressure may seem clumsy to use
but its
accuracy
is
beyond
any
doubt.
On the
contrary
the air
pres-
sure type of blood pressure
mea-
surement
is more
convenient
and
easily portable
but may give
falsely
lower readings
through
repeated
use.
The
latest
is
the electronic
type
that is
easiest
to
use. Out
of
the
different
models,
those
with
the
up-
per arm cuffs
are most
reliable.
The
blood
pressure tends
to
be higher
in
the clinic
-
the so-called
"white
coat phenomenon" which can only
be avoided when
the
blood
pres-
sure
is
taken at
home and
alter
a
good rest
-
this
reading is,
in
fact,
the
most
"realistic".
Usually, a read-
ing
of
135/85 mm Hg
is
taken
as
the
upper limit
or
normal.
To
get a
good
reading,
clothing should
not
be included
in
the cuff, except for
thin
underwear; the cuff should be
wrapped
round
snugly;
pressure
should
be
brought
up
promptly and
well
above
the
expected highest
reading; then released gradually. lt
pays to document
the
blood pres-
sure with due care.
