INCENSE POUCHES WORN
FOR DISEASE PREVENTION
We often wonder
why,
kids
are given colorful
incense
pouches
to
wear during
the
Dragon Boat
Festival.
ln
Changsha,
Hunan Province, at
the
historical Mawangdui
Han
Tomb,
a
female
body was
found
to
be
holding
a
pair
of
incense
pouches
in her hands. Modern
analysis found the pouches to
contain powder
made
from
lily
magnolia,
cassia
bark,
eupatorium, xanthoxyli, etc.,
all
for
medicinal
purposes.
Nowadays,
for
disease
prevention, incense
pouches
containing
powder from
alpiniae
officinarum, euphatorium,
cas-
sia
bark, borneol,
etc.
have
been found
in
trials to be
useful
for flu prevention. One trial with
120
factory workers
wearing
such pouches had significantly
less
flu
attacks
than
another
120
workers with no
pouches.
Although
the
ingredients
of
these
pouches
cannot killthe flu
virus, secretory immuno-globu-
lin
A (SlgA) production is
en-
hanced inside
the
respiratory
airway,
leading
to
better
protec-
tion
against the flu virus. Thus,
traditional Chinese
medicine
is
a
great treasure that remains to
be discovered fully.
