A
SPECIALIST
CLINICAL
PSYCHOLOGIST'S
IMPARTIALITY
ON''DEATH
MUSIC"?
Chen
Lei, a
third-year
uni-
versity student, fainted
whilst
lis-
tening to Gloomy Sunday,
a
very
melancholic music
written
in
1933
by
a
Hungarian
pianist
Rezso
Seress after
his heart
was
broken by
his
close girl
friend.
Popular
after
publishing
in
Budapest,
it
was
very well played
by JazzArtist
Paul Robeson
and
Billie
Holiday
in
America
in the
early 1940's. From
1933
to
1945,
the
suicide
of
100 people were
blamed and anecdotal
cases
abound, e.9., a
policewoman
in-
vestigating
a
related
suicidal
case,
had also
committed suicide
herself.
She wrote
to
the
Commissioner,
"...there
is
no
need
to
pursue my case
any
more,
the "murderer"
is
actually
Gloomy Sunday".
The
clinical
psychologist's view is
individual
proneness to suggestion,
espe-
cially those
who
have seen terri-
fying stories on the Web
before
listening
to
this
music.
Experimentally, 50 students
lis-
tened without any prior
sugges-
tion
never had any
adverse
reactions. Moreover,
as
during
those
13
years
after
publication,
the WHO reported
up
to
10 mil-
lion people committing suicide,
100
people would
just
be a tiny
speck
that is
hardly
insignificant
statistically.
After
5 sessions
of
psychological
treatment,
Chen
Leiwas
back
to
normal.
